The hit movie “Avatar”, which has been Hollywood’s highest grossing each week since it debuted on December 10, 2009, has given up its thrown as the highest grossing film. The current leading film is Dear John, which stars Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried. The movie is a romantic drama which follows a soldier who falls in love with a conservative college student. This past week “Dear John” grossed about $36 million, while “Avatar” grossed only $23 million.
During “Avatar’s” 7 week run as the highest grossing film, the hit movie earned over $630 million domestically, making it the highest grossing film of all time in the United States. Internationally, “Avatar” has earned over $2 billion. Prior to “Avatar”, the highest grossing film of all time was “Titanic,” which was the first film to earn over $600 million in the United States.
“Avatar,” which was directed, written, and produced by James Cameron, is a science fiction thriller which is based in the year 2154 when humans are mining for a precious metal on the planet of Pandora. “Avatar” stars Giovanni Ribisi, Sigourney Weaver, and Sam Worthington. Cameron is presently planning on writing and direction a sequel to Avatar, which will debut within the next few years.
