Sean Penn, who was recently accused of attacking a photographer in California last year, has been charged with vandalism and battery. The actor is said to have kicked the photographer’s leg and broken his camera. He could face up to eighteen months in jail if he’s convicted.
The entire incident was filmed on a video that was posted on TMZ’s website, where he was seen kicking the man and telling him to get out.
Penn’s arraignment is scheduled for March 22nd, according Frank Mateljan, LA city attorney spokesman. Messages left for Penn’s attorney, Barry Hirsh, were not returned.
He will not have to appear in court as long as he is represented by an attorney. He has had many run-ins with the law, including attacking an extra in 1987 on the film, “Colors,” where only half of his sentence was served. He was also on probation at that same time for punching a songwriter in an LA nightclub.
Similar paparazzi situations occurred with rapper Kanye West and actor Gerald Butler. Both of those cases were dismissed after the men completed their community service orders. West paid for breaking some broken camera equipment in the September 2008 scuffle with a paparazzi.
