Sir Andrew Lloyd To Buy Abbey Road Studio?

The iconic Abbey Road studio, where the Beatles recorded their biggest hits (including an album called “Abbey Road,”) may soon find itself under new ownership. Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s spokesperson confirmed Friday that the British musical theater composer and impresario is “very interested” in buying the property: “He thinks it is vital that the studios are saved for the future of the music industry in the UK.”

The studio is currently owned by the financially troubled music company, EMI. Any offer Lloyd Webber makes on the property is projected to be well in excess of £30 million.

“He first recorded there in 1967 with Tim Rice,” Lloyd Webber’s rep told reporters. “Andrew has since recorded most of his musicals there, from Jesus Christ Superstar to his new musical Love Never Dies.”

Sir Andrew’s’s not the only one. Pink Floyd recorded “Dark Side of the Moon” at Abbey Road. The studio has also provided facilities for Oasis, Cliff Richard, Radiohead, Spandau Ballet, Simple Minds, Mike Oldfield, Jeff Beck and violinist Yehudi Menuhin.

Should Lloyd Webber’s negotiations fall through, Sir Paul McCartney has another suggestion: sell the Abbey Road venue to the British National Trust – but keep it open as a working recording studio. “If that could be married with the National Trust’s ownership, that would be a good scenario,” a source close to the former Beatle told British newspaper, the Daily Mail.
