A citizen of Germany was sentenced to a two year jail sentence on Tuesday, March 9th, for charges related to the attempted blackmail of Cindy Crawford and her family.
The German citizen, a 26 year old male by the name of Edis Kayalar, was found to be guilty by confession of attempting to extort $135,888 USD from Crawford and her husband, Rande Gerber, using a photograph displaying their daughter bound and gagged.
The photo was reportedly taken during a game of ‘cops and robbers’, and obtained by Kayalar during an affair with the Crawford family’s former nanny while living illegally within the U.S. An affidavit from the U.S. reported that Kayalar intended to sell the photo to tabloids for $500,000 USD. Kayalar also made it clear that he believed the photo was worth much more to the Crawford family.
According to the document, he asserted that he “was not trying to destroy a little girl’s life, but the release of the photograph was not going to be something positive for the victims’ image.”
His demands for money increased after his deportation from the U.S. in 2009, after having already received $1,000 USD from Gerber for a print of the photograph.
