“Love lasts a long time, but burning desire, two to three weeks,” pop singer Carla Bruni told Le Figaro Madame magazine in 2007, adding, “Monogamy bores me terribly.”
But that was before she married French President Nicolas Sarkozy and became the First Lady of France.
Now those words are coming back to haunt her, amidst a swirl of Internet reports that both she and her husband are having affairs. Bruni’s lover is alleged to be French singer Benjamin Biolay, this year’s big winner at the “Victoires de la musique” (France’s answer to the Grammys), while Sarkozy is said to be finding consolation in the arms of his ecology minister, Chantal Jouanno.
Bruni’s track record for fidelity wasn’t too impressive coming into her marriage. The Italian-born former model is said to have had affairs with Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, actor Vincent Perez and former French Prime Minister Laurent Fabius, among others. She ended a relationship with philosophy professor Raphaël Enthoven by running off with his son.
For her part, Bruni seems completely unphased by rumors of her husband’s infidelity. “Have you ever seen a picture of him having an affair?” she asked Britain’s Sky News during a recent interview. “Ah, so.”
