The man accused of stalking ESPN sportscaster Erin Andrews has been sentenced to 30 months in a federal prison. Michael David Barrett pled guilty to interstate stalking back in December shortly after he was charged.
The judge in the case gave Barrett the maximum sentence allowed for the charges despite a plea bargain that called for 27 months. The 48 year old insurance executive videotaped Andrews in several different hotel rooms through a peephole. He then posted the videos on the internet.
Andrews was in court when Barrett made a public apology to the TV star. Her response was tearful, but angry. The convicted stalker is under investigation for uploading videos of at least 16 other women. Those charges could possibly keep him behind bars longer than the current imposed sentence. He must report to prison by May third.
His sentence includes three years of supervised probation following his release from prison. A no contact order has also been imposed restricting him from contacting that includes Andrews, her friends and family. He has been ordered to 7,366 dollars in restitution and 5,000 dollars in fines. ESPN may also be awarded restitution up to 400,000 dollars that they paid out for lawyers and security guards for the young reporter.
