Long before entering the ring, Mike Tyson raised pigeons in his New York City, Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. This love of pigeons has landed Mike Tyson another gig. Not in the ring but on the program Animal Planet. The exciting sport of pigeon racing will be the topic. In the show Mike Tyson will take on the best contestants in pigeon racing.
When Mike Tyson was in his old neighborhood and playing with a pigeon, he was accosted by a gang member who took away the pigeon and snapped its neck. Mike handled him roughly and earned a reputation that would bring him to the boxing ring. His career in boxing let him escape the troubled streets and the gang atmosphere.
Mike Tyson really loves these birds and his passion will be evident to those who will view the show. The show will not debut until 2011 and the animal rights’ fanatics at PETA already have Mike Tyson in their cross hairs. They claim that the show will highlight cruelty to animals and profiteering.
This will be a new phase in Mike Tyson’s career. One can only wish him the best of luck. He has had some hard times up until now and deserves a break.

PETA is ridiculous. I support Mike Tyson in this endeavor. Honestly, here’s a guy with a troubled childhood, that led to a troubled life as an adult.
To be able to come full circle and return to an early passion in his lifetime would be a great victory for Mike. PETA will try and take the spotlight becasue Tyson’s name is attached to it, so they know people will pay attention to it. Personally, I’d pay to see Mike Tyson fight the entier PETA organization.
You are right. Mike Tyson did not ever have what you would call a childhood. Mike was a manchild, he probably did not hang with “Kids”. He was robbing people at the age of 12.
Maybe he can get some semblance of what it is to be a kid again.
I rememeber when mike would have all of those pigeon on the roof he made a pigeon coop for them, this is his soft side, for some reson he really cared for those birds.
I couldn’t agree with you more, you have to admire this strong-willed person who would invest his time and money for the good of his pigeons. I, to, have rehabilitated injured pigeons in my home, they are tender-loving creatures; rather smart. Simply put: “I love pigeons as Mike Tyson does.” Mike won’t abuse these birds because he respects them for what they are, and wants to protect them. I am anxious to see the races. These races no doubt will be very amusing, without any damage done to these loving creatures. GREAT!!
way to go Mike.This is a great way for Mike to heal after the loss of his daughter and get back to the real Mike Tyson.I has simialr experiences involving some punks and my Chihuahuas.People who pick on animals deserve to get their butts royally kicked,We have birds hanging out inside one of our air vents and we’re going to let them stay until the summer.As a matter of fact when those birds made their presence known the first person I thought of was Iron Mike.Now that we have cable I’ll be watching for the show.hope we get reinbursed from the cable company for poisinng my dog with plaster before the show starts.Thank God ny dog survived.Next time I will hen-peck them more and be sure that they clean their mess up after they spend the whole day trying to proposition me.Mike is a strong man and I’m going to keep my chin up like he does and get these Chihuahuas ready for a spring race,too.They love birds and the same dog suffered CHF and CKF after most of our trees were cut down.It was like the movie Avatar.I could not believe it but,we’re making it and coning back stronger thanks to the new pet meds and being there for my guys.PETA is just doing their job but even though my dogs love to watch birds and listen to them sing you know they wouldn’t turn ‘em down for dinner.Some of these birds are bigger than my special needs dog so,we keep the windows closed and respect the environment.WE love you Mike.Can’t wait for your best-selling book.

Yes, Mike Tyson is a “train wreck” or monumental proportions, but I sincerely hope he succeeds in this. It will be a very humble existence compared to the money he made boxing, but maybe it will tone down his aggression.
As for PETA… what reasonable statement could they possibly make regarding pigeon racing? In order to race them, you essentially have to set the birds free!… and guess what?… THEY COME BACK! So they must not be terribly unhappy if they CHOOSE to come back!

Mike’s pigeons, as well as other racing pigeons people keep, are treated BETTER than any pigeon in the wild. Believe me, a good racing pigeon is expensive. I met a guy that participated in the sport. PETA needs to go away on this one. Who are they to say what type of pet you can keep. What are they going to do next?- say you cannot have a dog in a dog show?

It’s certainly not the first time a well known celeb came forward to promote their passion for pigeons! Michael Landon had a great love for these birds as well as tens of thousands around the globe. Landon narrated a number of pigeon related videos that were an inspiration to animal people on many levels. Go for it Mike, I remember seeing you at a visit to the Los Angeles Pigeon Clubs annual Pageant of Pigeons Show, so please don’t forget to mention that end of a fine sport/hobby. jmack
Peoples comments towards Mike are cruel. They need to look at themselves in the mirror before writing such mean words. Nobody is perfect and if Mike has a hobbie and love of racing pigeons then I think it is great. Besides, maybe he loves pigeons more than people! Flying rats with wings they are not, They are healthier than most people and there pets. They look nothing like a common barn pigeon. Pigeons well taken care of and race conditioned are something to watch fly. Powerful, Smart and lets see your dog come home from 500 miles in the same day, To the home they love.
