It seems that it does not matter who your parents are in Federal Judge Richard Berman’s courtroom. Yesterday he sentenced Cameron Douglas to five years in prison.
Cameron Douglas, the 31-year-old son of the Academy Award-winning actor, Michael Douglas, was sentenced yesterday in a New York court to five years jail time. The sentencing came as a result of his guilty plea to trafficking methamphetamine and cocaine in connection with his 2009 arrest. Cameron initially faced 10 years, but was sentenced to five with eight months credit for time which he has already served.
The young Douglas seemed remorseful when he told the court yesterday before his sentencing, “I apologize to my family and my loved ones for putting them through this nightmare of my making.”
It was a dramatic scene as Michael cried when his son spoke to the judge and Diandra Douglas, Michael’s ex-wife and mother to the boy, mouthed “I love you” to him.
Last month Michael and ex-wife Diandra along with many other family members wrote letters to the judge asking for leniency in the sentence. They petitioned the judge for Cameron to do his jail time in a drug treatment facility rather than a prison.
It is just a waste of public funds and a life that is deserving of rehabilitation for a judge with no feelings to sentence this child who is already in pain to experience the inhumanity of jail. All he has is a problem for which he needs help. My heart goes out to his family.
He was trafficking hard core drugs, that’s more than a little problem. He deserves what he got, in fact he should have gotten worse, he got off light if you ask me. Christine you really should read about the whole case before you make a comment.

I agree with Christine, the system is flipped on it’s ear. We let the serious offenders get by way to easy and the people who need help, we prosecute. I say any person who is stupid enough to feel they need meth doesn’t deserve our tax dollars. They need a cold turkey program to get there life back.

I agree with Brittany and Gae….He was trafficking drugs, which more than likely end up in the hands of truly the young…he is no young man…he is 31 years old & knew better. He assumed he wouldn’t be caught or do time. And yes, it does matter who you are and who you know apparently, as anyone else whould not have received any mercy at all, but imposed the sentence befitting the crime.
He made a plea bargain which called for a 10 year sentence and he knew that when he took the deal. Then his rich family and friends cried and whined and blamed his problems on the fact they’re rich and he was spoiled and asked for a lighter sentence. The judge rolled over on the original mandtory 10 year sentence, gave him 1/2, and credited him with 8 months served. It’s cases such as this that make a mockery of our justice system. That kid had EVERY opportunity for a great life and he blew it – plain and simple. Now we’re supposed to give him a lighter sentence BECAUSE he came from a famous – moneyed family?!?!??!? What about the kids who have NO advantage?!?!? Who is the champion of their cause?!? Will Michael and Kirk go to bat for them?!?! Yeah-I didn’t think so. It’s time this boy learns what it means to ‘suck it up’. Same goes for his Dad and Grandfather.

Succinctly stated, ” If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime.” Lady Justice needs to put her blindfold back on, and serve out justice in a fair and impartial way. There should be no special deals or dispensation for a convicted felon just because he is a member of the rich and famous. If anything, they should realize that they are role models and set a good example, instead of taking advantage of their celebrity status and flaunt it in the faces of everyone else. Life in a fishbowl is not easy. I guess Cameron Douglas just found that out. I hope he learns his lesson while he is staying at the Grey Bar Motel.

He should have been sentenced to the max like many black folks who are currently serving longer sentences for less than what he did. Put him in a cell block with Big Penis Tommy, whom I know will take good care of him. When Tommy is done with him, he won’t be interested in selling or trafficking drugs but will be thinking about fecal incontinence and how to stay afloat in a pool.
