Hugh Hefner is known for many things, but good deeds generally do not come to mind when his name is mentioned until recently.
America’s playboy recently shelled out the remaining $900,000 needed in order to save the iconic “Hollywood” sign. The 138 acres on Mount Lee, where the famous symbol of Hollywood sits, was at stake until the “Playboy” owner reached deep into his pockets in order to foot the remaining bill in order to save the sign.
Developers had shown interest in the acreage in order to build luxury mansions; however, a non-profit group was given the ability to purchase the land for $12.5 million by April 30th. With the amount raised standing close to $1 million short, Hefner came up with the difference in order to stop the bulldozers from moving forward.
Hefner said of his choice to save the sign, “It would have been a real shame after having restored it if it wound up sold. It’s become something iconic and represents not only the town but represents Hollywood dreams, and I think that’s something worth preserving.”
The famous sign was originally built in 1923 in order to promote real estate in the area. The first sign boasted “Hollywoodland.” It was later restored in 1978.
