A six year old boy has died after a dental visit at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia. Jacobi Lewis was at the center for a routine dental proceedure and suffered cardiac arrest after being put under an anesthetic. Jacobi’s mother, Crystal, is in shock and has demanded answers from the VCU staff and at the current time has not gotten any answers.
‘Jacobi had the biggest and best smile any child can have’, stated Cyrstal Lewis. ‘I feel like I deserve some kind of answer to exactly what happened and I am not getting anything from them.’ VCU Medical Center is widely recognized as one of the top dental surgery and bariatric surgery facilities not only in the United States but in the entire world.
Dr. Jeff Bennett stated that while a child passing away from anethesia is rare, it can happen to any child regardless of their condition. He said it could happen to healthy children just as quick as one who is very sick. Still, this is a case where medical malpractice insurance comes into play. ‘This is something that while it may be a devestating thing, insurance is there to cover the damages and the parties must carry on’ said Bennett. Crystal Lewis still seems not to be satisfied.
