Sony continues to apologize to Playstation users for the lengthy time its network was inoperative as it seeks to repair its network. Many users have expressed concern about their credit card information and whether it was stolen or not. The concern was expressed after the company first expressed no concerns about the theft of financial information that was encrypted, but then told users to verify the information on their credit card bills is accurate.
Technological computer experts and law enforcement officials are continuing to investigate a breach in the system of April 17. The information about the breach was not revealed, however, until April 27. Some have speculated the information was not released because Sony was attempting to determine who caused the problem. Others have claimed the company wanted to hide the problem.
A lawsuit concerning the event has been filed by attorney Ira Rothken on behalf of Qriocity and Playstation subscribers.
Rothken said the lawsuit was initiated for consumers to “learn the full extent” of the security practices concerning data for the company, how much data was lost, “and to seek a remedy” for those affected. Reports have said the data security problems should be solved by May 4th.

Fresh off the data breach that slammed Sony’s PlayStation Network, rival Microsoft has issued a security warning tied to Xbox Live and the Activision shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
At the support website for Xbox Live, Microsoft has posted a service alert stating that “users may receive potential phishing attempts via title specific messaging while playing Modern Warfare 2.”
Microsoft says they are working to resolve the issue. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience,” reads the alert.
The alert arrives as Sony tackles a massive data breach of its PlayStation Network that will keep the online service shut down for at least another week.
Modern Warfare 2 continues to be one of the most popular titles on Xbox Live. According to a recent report on Xbox Live activity from programming director Major Nelson, it’s the second most popular title behind Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Will there be any reembursment for those of us that have bought online only games recently. I have bought many games just because of the sony name and now my son and I can’t even play the ones we just bought. In the last 2 months I have spent 150 dollars or better on games for this system and two of them are online only. What are you going to do to compensate us for our loss of the Playstation Network. It wasn’t my fault that it is down and now I and my son have to deal with it. It is the only system that we own so we can’t just turn on another game system and play. Criminals are now in possession of my financial information, this is because Sony failed to establish the necessary safeguards around said information. I know that Sony probably had a good system in place to protect the information, but nothing is ever 100% safe. You think that PSN is ‘free’? Excuse me – no company gives anything away for free. Sony decided to pursue a different model than Microsoft. Sony’s model for operation of the PSN is based on money made from sales of hardware, software, game downloads, streaming video and music services. When you purchase anything that requires the PSN, you are funding the PSN directly. You ARE paying for it.
Sony has simply chosen the bury the cost of the PSN into these items. If it were absolutely ‘free’ then anyone would be able to use it without the prerequisite purchases (specifically, a PS3 and supporting game titles).
So, when someone purchases an item that funds the PSN, it is reasonable that they expect the service for use of these items to be online. Reasonable downtimes notwithstanding, the service is expected to be up and online.
Take for example the game DC Universe Online. If you are a PS3 user, you cannot play with game without the PSN. There is no single player offline mode. To add insult to injury, a separate fee is required to play this specific game on top of the purchase price of the game itself. People who own this game currently cannot play, and because prepayment is required to access the game, they are not receiving services that they’ve already paid for.
I do find it odd that people insist that PSN is somehow free – a generous gift from Sony, and that consumers have no rights of service expectation for it.
I like my PS3. I like Sony. This has all been unfortunate. But this really hasn’t been handled very well. Customers are going to have very lofty expectations from Sony with regard to compensation and PSN features when the dust settles, and I don’t have a lot of faith that Sony will see it that way.
We’ll see.
xbox live uses the exact same tactics that you just talked about. If this happened to xbox live, you have a right to complain about it because they throw a $50 fee on top of all of the things you mentioned.

Why do people insist on blaming Sony, they were the target of a criminal action. Any security system can be breached given the time and effort. They are working on fixing the system and making changes, or would everyone just like the same network, including the hole found just put back up. I’m with wiemken. I bought DC Universe and can’t even play it. I could have bought something else. Best buy won’t let me exchange the game for something I can play because of their “policy!” I’m out the $60 for the game. I’d rather they shut the system down to get it fixed but I didn’t even know about it when I bought my game and now I’m stuck going for trophies in old games I’m bored with.

Sony has been gracious enough to give us a free gaming network furthermore,(not that i would buy them) but sony also allows 3rd party products, controllers etc. for those who may not be able to afford the sony brand stuff. Well, one thing I’m pissed about is a company this large is too cheap to encrypt specific data so it’s not as easy to reach out and get… and another thing is that a multi-billion dollar company puts a series of games out and within 24 hours those games are not accessible for online play for now over a week and will most likely be a minimum of another week… We pay twice as much for a game because it’s available for online play… now, what do we have? A game we can’t play online and paid twice as much for it! No, it don’t really change my life but it just goes to prove that the consumer takes it in the ass every time. When they find the culprits and file a lawsuit and win that lawsuit… it’s not the common consumer that will win, it’s the corporations and lawyears… the game is still going to cost us double, whether we can use it or not! Hell, do you really think this is going to help any? They can’t even seem to keep simple cheaters off the games… hacking has become a way of life in our technologically, low-ethics, instant gratification society. It’s all a joke now! Time to move to Ruby Ridge!

What about those of us who subscribe to services like Hulu Plus, Netflix, and Qriocity? I have all three and use them exclusively through my PS3 since both of the computers in my house are broken (kids). Am i supposed to cancel my subscriptions to these services being that i cannot use them?? Will i be reimbursed since this network outage is actually costing me money?? Is Sony going to address these issues at all, or just let us all figure it out on our own??? I feel like they have left us all high and dry so to speak. Ps3 is selling for the same price as an x-box but includes a blue ray player and they don’t charge you 100 ****ing dollars a year just to play online games. And i have had my ps3 for two years with no problems. I think that people are blowing things out of proportion just because they havn’t been able to play video games for a week. You see… s**t happens, and it happens to everybody in life and the only people that we hold onto when times get tough are those who supported us and help us in time of need. And now that it’s happening to sony after all the money they saved us (Or me at least) everybody seems to be b****ing about it… seriously, grow up. well we all have our opinions…. I say get psn back online and make everyone happy and I would rather pay for psn and get other free things like map packs and stuff.. If they charges for black ops they would come out with more map packs and give you more so you may get more for your money… But I still like the free about it but the servers suck cause it’s free lags and lots of off time on psn. But that’s what you get for it being free….

ima huge sony fan, my friend payed over a 300 dollars on being online for a couple(3) of years with xbox, replaced it twice(pieces of $hit) = 500ish lost.probably paid 200 on batteries. 80 for wireless internet on xbox, all = $1080. All while he couldnt surf the net, or blu ray… lol some people used to buy computers just to surf the net… ps. their controller blows!!

this is exactly why you shouldn’t use your credit cards on something like a backround for you playstation, things like that are just not needed and is definitely a waste of money. All you have to do is buy a system, buy a game, and your online for free, no other system has that kind of convenience and in my own personal opinion, if you do like to buy stuff on the PSN, like backgrounds, avatars, or themes, then you need to get a new hobby, besides, half of those things you can find a free one. You should have realized this was going to happen when you couldn’t join a match in COD without it being hacked. Took Microsoft almost 6 years to get the xbox made so it wouldnt overheat constantly. Plus they charge you to play online. I hope PSN comes back stronger and more user friendly like Xbox’s party system and joining your friends in games, This should be added as well, when you’re a party you cab watch the game your party members are playing, say like when your are in tournement mode. many of you people writing here are mad about the outage, some of you probably havent put ur details on ur console, your just moaning about the outage, but to be fair your going to have to wait because the people who did put there details need to sorted first, they are the ones who may have there money stolen sometime, so they must be prioritized, if noone payed anything using there card on the playstation network then this wouldnt of been an issue. the fact that playstation actually made those network card things is because of people who may be worried about putting details in. To be brutally honest the playstaion network shouldnt of had a facility where people can just put the deatils in once and forget about, users dont know where this info is being stored, so the best option would of been those cards. Now im a xbox owner and im very concerned about xbox live now, I dont know why i prefer the xbox i just do (personal prefernce). Any ways if hackers have managed to get into ps3 where many users actually dont buy with their cards, then what if it happened to xbox. Nearly everyone who owns an xbox would have at some point put there details in, and if hackers got into there then it would be a much worser problem. Im seriously considering switching from xbox to ps3 now despite the issues, because i dont have to pay, yes i might wants some dlc once in a while but itll be less frequent and its just a one off fee = less risk of fraud, and to be honest a quite large percentage of console owners are kids, who dont have any credit cards or what ever, so there parents would have to use theirs, which can detor them from xbox because of the hassle of payment

ya know maybe i do pay $60 a year for Xbox live, but if that’s all it costs a year I’m cool with that, giving back to the people giving me a good gaming experience and I can say I’ve never had my Xbox live down like this so called “Amazing” PSN, I had playstation a while back for a week then sold it because I didn’t like it, to me its a blu-ray player and a web server nothing more, sure i envy it for having little big planet and maybe kill zone but other than that I’ve enjoyed my Xbox better, oh and Modern warfare sucks anyways with all COD games, and maybe I am a bit of a fan boy, probably what I’ll be called but when your calling me it at least ill be chilling online playing games online with my friends, while you all sit at home waiting for your so called “Free” PSN that will probably get hacked again sooner or later
yeah… i beleive its called single player? you can live off that for a week till you get your precious prestige classes back
Man, the wife is happy, cod is not on the tv all the time, I see my kids more, even went out and cleaned the yard. It’s like rehab for my fix for the network.
