67-Yard Field Goal Sets New Record
High Schooler Austin Rehkow Kicks 67 Yard Field Goal
Central Valley High School kicker Austin Rehkow booted a 67 yard field goal against Shadle Park High Thursday night, reports Yahoo Sports.
The game-ending kick tied the score at 55, and forced overtime. Central Valley then went on to win 62-55.
The kick broke the Washington state record of 62 yards–held by Kelly Imhoff since 1929. The longest kick on record is 68 yards, set in 1985 by Dirk Borgognone of Reno, Nevada.
“I kicked it and I was a little bit worried it was going to be a little bit left,” Rehkow said afterwards. “To get it with no wind, and especially to win the game, it’s a special feeling.”
“I felt confident in my leg strength,” Rehkow told The Spokesman-Review newspaper. “I went out there and you get that extra adrenaline going. I let it rip. Luckily it stayed through the uprights and once I saw the arms go up (from referees) it was just an overwhelming feeling of joy.”
Rehkow’s teammates congratulated him enthusiastically after the ball cleared the crossbar. The game had to be halted temporarily.
Thus far, Rehkow has only one partial scholarship offer from Eastern Washington. He also booted field goals of 56 and 52 yards this season.
