Olympic Skier in Topless Photo Flap
Sochi, Russia – Olympic skier Jackie Chamoun has sparked a controversy in her native Lebanon because of photographs which have emerged of her topless and scantily clad. Now, the photographs were part of a calendar of both sexes promoting the sport. While it’s clear from the pictures that Ms. Chamoun is definitely worthy of wearing a thong, they are not pornographic by Western standards.
Therein lies the rub. Her native Lebanon has very strong provincial sentiments and the emergence of the photographs at this time has caused quite the disapproval from her native countrymen. In fact, the Olympic Committee has been asked to conduct an inquiry into her behavior. It isn’t likely that Ms. Chamoun will be censured. It bears mentioning again that she is not shown naked. The pictures are edgy, but all athletes must be judged by a common standard and not by the individual dictates of a single demographic of one nation.
Nor are the pictures a new story. Ms. Chamoun even spoke about the photo shoot a fortnight ago during NBC pre-Olympic coverage. When asked about it, she frankly admitted that the experience was enjoyable. She did acknowledge that the photo shoot would not have been possible in her native Lebanon.
