In a very large hacking leak, nude photos of Oscar winning actress Jennifer Lawrence have been posted online. Access was apparently obtained through Apple’s iCloud online storage system. The photos were apparently on her mobile phone. The photos of Lawrence were posted on the online bulletin board 4Chan, and purport to show her in different states of undress.
A spokesman for Lawrence advised that police have been contacted. They’re seeking a prosecution. There is also speculation that anybody who has viewed the photos could be prosecuted. The spokesman also confirmed that the Lawrence photos are authentic.
Over 100 celebrities have learned overnight that lurid photos of them might have been hacked and released. Mary Elizabeth Winstead has also confirmed that photos of her leaked to the public are authentic. Two of the alleged victims of the hacker dispute the authenticity of photos that purport to depict them. Both Victoria Justice and gymnist, McKayla Maroney flatly state that the photos of them are fakes. A spokesperson for singer Ariana Grande has also denied the authenticity of photos depicting Grande.
Numerous Twitter accounts that have posted nude photos of Lawrence have been suspended, apparently for violating Twitter’s terms of service. Tumblr is also said to have her photos.
There is speculation that the hacker found a hole in Apple’s service that helps their customers find their lost iPhones. The company ordinarily protects itself from programs that guess passwords until they get a match. It is believed that the company failed to do this with the lost phone service, and the celebrities’ passwords were discovered. Apple says it is investigating the matter.

Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said the company was investigating whether any iCloud accounts had been tampered with, but she did not give any further details.
“We take user privacy very seriously and are actively investigating this report,” she said.
Security experts said that the security breach could have been prevented had two-factor authentication been enabled. “In general Apple has been a little late to the game in offering this kind of protection, and doesn’t advertise it,” said Darien Kindlund, director of threat research at security firm FireEye.
Actor Mary Elizabeth Winstead also confirmed that nude photos of her were posted online.
“To those of you looking at photos I took with my husband years ago in the privacy of our home, hope you feel great about yourselves,” Winstead posted on Twitter. Winstead, who starred in Final Destination 3 and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, wrote that she thought the images had been destroyed.
“Knowing those photos were deleted long ago, I can only imagine the creepy effort that went into this,” Winstead wrote.
Actor Seth Rogan remarked that what the hacker did was “really no different than selling stolen merchandise.” Others are expected to admit or deny the authenticity of a multitude of photos in the next week.
Victims of the exploit were alleged to include Jennifer Lawrence, Jenny McCarthy, Rihanna, Kate Upton, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kirsten Dunst, Ariana Grande, and Victoria Justice.
