Wednesday’s second leg World Cup qualifier between Ireland and France ended in controversial fashion, leaving the Irish on the outside looking in as the French head to next year’s World Cup in South Africa. The two teams were in the midst of a two-legged playoff match, with the winner awarded one of the final spots from Europe to the World Cup.

France won on November 14th in Dublin, and the Irish were dominating the return match in Paris thanks a 33rd minute goal from captain Robbie Kean. The match appeared headed for a decisive penalty shootout until French striker Thierry Henry settled the ball in the Irish box and crossed it to defender William Gallas who headed home the tying goal. The goal gave France the 2-1 aggregate lead and sent the French through to the World Cup.

Immediately the Irish were crying foul and replays clearly showed that Henry not once, but twice, used his arm and hand to keep the ball from going beyond him out of bounds before centering the ball to his teammate.

During post game interviews, Henry admitted to the media he had illegal handled the ball. Henry even told the press he informed Irish players on the pitch immediately after the goal that he handled it. The dust had not even settled and the Irish were demanding a replay of the match. Irish captain Robbie Keane, and the Football Association of Ireland have demanded a replay of the match, something Henry believes would be in the best interest of fairness. As of Friday, the FAI already had one request for a replay denied by FIFA, football’s governing body. Late Friday, the FAI along with their French counterparts, had submitted another request for the match to be replayed.

A precedent has been set regarding replays after matches ended in controversy. English side Arsenal agreed to replay an FA Cup tie against Sheffield United in 1999 due to an issue of fair play.

Should Ireland get their rematch?

The 27-year-old New York City based designer took home top honors on Thursday’s sixth season finale of Runway, praised for her “cohesive” and “modern” Fashion Week collection.

Shabayeva, who beat out finalists Althea Harper and Carol Hannah Whitfield, both 24, for this season’s title, was initially criticized for sending a collection of black and gray-colored items down the runway.

“I can’t believe it!” the newest Project Runway winner exclaimed, jumping into consultant Tim Gunn’s arms as he walked out to congratulate her at the end.

“I’m definitely proud of myself,” she said, giving props to her opponents. “I think this deserves a pat on the back, because I had some stiff competition.”

Shabayeva won $100,000 and a spread in Marie Claire and a Paris vacation.

Do you think Shabayeva should have won?

Retailers Across Canada and the US are getting ready for the holiday season with doorbuster deals and major promotional campaigns in hopes that shoppers will open their wallets and seize the opportunity to save.

Both U.S.-based retailing giant Wal-Mart and Sears Canada have unveiled lower prices, particularly on bigger ticket items like LCD televisions, Blu-Ray players, pots and pans and other cooking products.

The country’s biggest retailers have come up with plans to slash prices on more items to lure penny-pinching shoppers.

Here in Canada discount giant Wal-Mart said Thursday it will cut the prices of more than 18,000 items this month, which it says amounts to 20 per cent more cuts than at the same time last year.

On the list of discounts are a Samsung home theatre DVD and sound system for $296, about $100 off the previous price, and a Rachel Ray stainless steel cookware set for $169.97, about $60 lower.

“We know this has been a tough year for Canadians, so we have made every effort to drop our prices and help Canadians make their dollars go farther this holiday season,” said David Cheesewright, the president and CEO of Canadian operations for the world’s biggest retailer.

Sears Canada has launched a “Boxing Day prices” campaign that reduces price tags on several items for three days this weekend, while some stores will stay open for extended hours. The promotion lengthens a single-day sale that ran at the same time last year.

Sears said a Samsung 40-inch LCD TV will sell for $799.88, while it will offer a Craftsman Electric Snowblower for $299.99, taking $200 off the regular price.

For Americans, the start of the Christmas shopping comes with the incredible deals on black Friday.

Retails like Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Amazon all have incredible black friday doorbuster deals.

Do you plan on taking advantage of the incredible deals this weekend?

Miley Cyrus Bus Overturns in Deadly Crash

On Friday, November 20, at around 8:15 AM a tour bus for Miley Cyrus carrying nine people overturned on Interstate 85 in Virginia. Miley Cyrus was not on the bus at the time of the accident.

As a result of the crash, one person died and one person was treated for minor injuries. The other passengers were unharmed. The deceased was the driver of the tour bus.

The accident may have been the result of wet roads since the weather the previous night had been rainy. The tour bus carried the lighting crew for the tour and was part of a caravan of four other tour buses on their way to Greensboro, NC, where Miley is set to perform next.

Cyrus’ rep confirmed to TMZ, that the “Hanna Montanna” star was not on the bus.

“It was one of our tour buses, but not Miley’s. It was one of our buses that transported our lighting crew,” explained the rep.

Cyrus, who is the daughter of country singer Billy Ray, made it big starring on Disney’s “Hannah Montana” and has since had an incredibly successful singing career. She is the daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus.

Procter & Gamble has issued a recall for for three lots of Vicks Sinex nasal spray.

The company has voluntarily recalled approximately 120,000 bottles of Vicks Sinex Nasal Spray after finding the bacteria Burkholderia cepacia in a small amount of the product,

Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC), or simply Burkholderia cepacia is a group of catalase-producing, non-lactose-fermenting Gram-negative bacteria composed of at least nine different species, typically found in water and soil and can survive for prolonged periods in moist environments.

In a press release Procter & Gamble said:

The company has said that it is taking precautionary step after finding the bacteria B cepacia in a small amount of product made at its plant in Gross Gerau, Germany. There have been no reports of illness.

However, the bacteria could cause serious infections for individuals with a compromised immune system, or those with chronic lung conditions. B cepacia poses little medical risk to healthy individuals.

Procter & Gamble (P&G) had detected this problem during routine quality control at the plant. According to the company’s analysis, this problem is limited to a single batch of raw material mixture involving three lots of product. These three lots were sold only in the US, Germany and the UK.

P&G is removing the product in question from store shelves and has informed regulatory authorities in the affected countries.

P&G has said that it found the bacteria B cepacia in a small amount of product from US lot 9239028831 and is conducting testing on the UK and German lots that have been produced from the same batch of raw material mixture.

According to reports the recall only affects three countries – the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom.

First waffles and now pumpkin pies.

With the holidays just around the corner the traditional pumpkin pie that many families enjoy are about to become more expensive.

What happened was Nestle announced that heavy rains at their farm in Morton, Illinois made it difficult for them to bring in the pumpkin crop.

As a result, the maker that sells nearly 90% of the canned pumpkins nationwide said that it will not can or harvest any more pumpkins this year. According to Nestle they have tired everything possible to bring in the crop this year; however the soggy conditions have made it difficult to effectively harvest the crop with a limited window of opportunity. Because they had similar problems last year means there was no excess pumpkins that they could carry over into this year, resulting in the shortage.

This comes at a challenging time for many Americans who will now have to pay more for their traditional holiday meal because of weather related issues.

What this shows is that in spite the eases in wholesale prices because of the recession there are still a number of different factors that can create shortages at any time.

The shortage of pumpkins this year only highlights this fact.

A researcher at McGill University in Montreal, discovered the fossil of three new prehistoric crocodiles, as part of excavations sponsored by the National Geographic Society.

Professor Hans Larsson and his colleague Paul Sereno of the University of Chicago, made these discoveries in northern Africa.

A new crocodile kaprosuchus saharicus, measuring six meters long and was armed with three pairs of tusks like those of a wild boar. The animal was carnivorous and could pursue its prey in water or on land in the region of the current Niger.

The second crocodile laganosuchus thaumastos, was fitted with a flattened nose to catch fish, while the third, araripesuchus rattoides, measuring only about a meter and was herbivorous. They inhabited the regions of Morocco and Niger.

“We have crocs that ate plants and galloped and ate dinosaurs and were flat as a board,” said Sereno, who unearthed the skeletons over the last several years in the Sahara.

Sereno said each croc was able to adapt to live in a very harsh environment.

“My African crocs appeared to have had both upright, agile legs for bounding over land and a versatile tail for paddling in water,” Sereno writes in National Geographic. “Their amphibious talents in the past may be the key to understanding how they flourished in, and ultimately survived, the dinosaur era.”

Researchers have also unearthed new fossils of two species of prehistoric crocodiles already known.

Defense Minister Peter MacKay stated the testimony of a top diplomat’s claims of torture and rape committed against Afghani detainees are not credible and said calls for an inquiry will not be followed up.

Dismissing information from Richard Colvin, once in command of the most large scale insurgencies over the past 15 years, as second or third hand knowledge, MacKay spoke for the Harper Government in stating there would be no further fact finding into Colvin’s particular claim of detainee handling.

In the meantime, opposition leaders in the New Democrat party have called MacKay’s actions “reprehensible”, part of a “massive and systemic” cover up and are making demands that a new inquiry be opened in order to find the level of truth in Colvin’s claims.

MacKay held firm and continually said Prime Minister Steven Harper had not been briefed on any information regarding poor detainee treatment.

“That’s not a mature and responsible way to govern a country or to deal with such an important issue,” said NDP leader Jack Layton.
