Antipsychotics Cause Weight Gain in Kids
Many children and teens have been prescribed antipsychotics to control behavioral problems and other emotional disorders. Studies have been done and have found that antipsychotics cause weight gain in kids. Among the other dangers of these kids taking antipsychotics, weight gain is becoming a predominant problem.
Antipsychotics should only be prescribed as a last resort and only used for children who are bipolar or psychotic. This has been stated by Dr. Monica Mitchell who is a child psychiatrist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. She also states that these drugs will do more harm than good to these children.
Depending on the type of antipsychotics that are taken, kids have been gaining from 8 to 19 pounds on average in only 11 weeks of taking the medications. It has been found that between 10% and 36% percent of the children have gained the weight and some have become obese in just the 11 week time period.
Dr. Christoph Correll of Zucker Hillside Hospital has stated that this weight gain is too dramatic and rapid. It is dangerous for children to be overweight and obese, and also dangerous for them to be taking drugs that they may not even need.
Along with the antipsychotics causing the weight gain, that can also cause high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. Many factors need to be considered before prescribing antipsychotics for children.
