Maclaren Stroller Recall

Stroller Recall

The British baby stroller major manufacturer Maclaren expects to recall approximately one million umbrella strollers because they have been proven to be a potential hazard to children. The stroller is opened or closed the hinge mechanism on the side can injure the child’s fingers if they are in the vicinity of it.

This recall is voluntary by the Maclaren Company after they received reports of twelve children having their fingertips cut off by the stroller hinge. The New York Daily News reported this although not all injuries were in the New York area. The recall is going to include all Maclaren strollers sold since 1999.

The Daily News reported that many parents in the New York area were outraged that the company had waited for so long before issuing the recall.

Free repair kits will be made available to consumers and retailers. These kits will cover a joint on the umbrellas strollers hinge mechanism. This recall was made with the cooperation of the Maclaren Company and the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission. The company and the Product Safety Commission advise parents to stop using the strollers immediately until they receive the repair kits.

UPDATE

The Canadian distributor of Maclaren umbrella strollers offered to help parents worried about their children, after finger amputations in the U.S. led to a recall of 1 million of the strollers.

Kushies Baby advised parents to call them at 1-800-841-5330 and the company will arrange to have hinge pad covers sent to them from Maclaren’s.

I tried to call the USA number of course cannot go through. I tried my retail store, they said Maclaren USA says nothing will be done in Canada. I tried Kushies here in Canada, their USA rep here. Left a voicemail and email.

I work for a retailer in Canada who sells Maclarena and this is what we were told. You can get a kit from Kushies. There have been no incidents of any kind in Canada and all the incidents in the USA resulted from children being in the stroller when it was attempted to be folded or folding the stroller while the child had their hands in the folding mechanism.
