Canadian Study Says Women Have A Better Sense Of Touch

A recent study from McMaster University seems to verify the idea that women seem to have a better sense of touch than men.

Women do tend to have smaller hands and this apparently means that the touch receptors within the hands tend to be closer together and thus give women a better idea of what they are touching. Women are also better at picking up the texture of these items.

It appears that the study was also able to figure out that the pointer finger was the item which is most sensitive to touch. Some people may have guessed the pinkie or some other digit. The people who put together the study know that people have been curious about this sort of information for years.

This kind of information can now be debated in a science course even at the college level with this study being cited as evidence that women have a better sense of touch.

The people who put this study together at McMaster University can be proud of the work they’ve done and thus the contribution they’ve made to the scientific community. McMaster University has done several studies similar to this that have contributed greatly to the world of science.

This article makes broad generalizations and is sexist. Oh wait, it can only be sexist if it claims that men are proven better at something… My bad, excuse the comment.

  2. Devon says:

I have to agree with LaoTze

  3. Quijote says:

This explains why I would rather be touched by a woman than by a man.

Yet another person who agrees with LaoTze

  6. Deal with it says:

Sorry guys ALL studies make broad generalizations regardless of gender. By playing the gender card sarcastically you are still playing the gender card, you are no better than the women who complain when a study shows a man is better at whatever the study concludes. Men complain when women fair better in something and women complain when men fair better – both genders like to cry sexism at any given moment, and Lao you are no different

    • John says:

So then small guys with small hands have more sensitive hands than women with large hands. Wow! Great study.

  7. Alogon says:

It’s not that the study is sexist, it’s that this article is a space filling mass of useless info.
Nothing is said as to how the study was done, the controls, the margin of error, etc. All this article does is say something was done, something was “proven” and then praises them as if written by the very people who did they study or the McMaster itself.
And really, the “pointer” finger? We here in the grown-up world call it an index finger.

    • DLanc says:

For many it’s difficult to see the forest from the trees, this type of research leads to a broader understanding of human development, neuroscience and even evolution. All grand understandings are the sum of many small observations.

@Alogon, I’m sure this study is published, and you can probably contact the McMaster to find out which journal it will be in if you’d like that information. :)

  8. Robert says:

What is the importance of that study ? There are more important subjects to research that would not be such time wasters

  9. NN says:

Robert: then do them – it’s easier than you might think.

  10. JR says:

Ummm I clearly remember doing this ‘study’ in a grade 9 or 10 science class (mid 90s). We were led (by the teacher and textbook) to the same conclusion re: hand size. Any conclusions regarding sex were unmakeable since it was an all-boys school. Thanks McMaster for the followup!

  11. Lindsay says:

    Waste waste waste.
Ask 100 people, who has a better sense of touch, men or women?
Did we really need the “research”

  12. FRANK OGDEN says:

i agree. i had a woman instructor during my helicopter training in Oklahoma and I claim I am a far better chopper pilot because of what she taught me.

  13. RickE says:

It couldn’t have anything to do with the fact that men probably have more callous hands than women, and far fewer men use lotions could it???
Thanks for the obvious results of a redundant study.
I wonder how much grant money the weasels scored.

  14. bluesky says:

A friend told me that a man with big hands and big nose is sexier than a man with small hands and a small nose, is that true?

  15. electricart says:

Another study saying how women are supposedly better then men. It is amazing how all the studies you hear about all say women are better then men. Amazing. Wow.

It is to bad that there are researchers out there that feel it necessary to bolster the female ego with flawed studies researching fields that have no practical use or validity while denegrating males. Or maybe it is just the media which fails utterly in showing all the facts in order to generate a headline that gains attention no matter how inaccurate it is.

It reminds me of how all the comercials on t.v. now show men as foolish, inept, dumb or other negative steriotypes.

I am just tired of hearing about this sort of foolishness.

  16. DarthDad says:

Although the article speaks of generalities, I can point our anecdotal evidence to suggest a problem with their methodology.

My wife’s hands are larger than all of our male friends’ save mine (thankfully). Her sense of touch appears to be greater than theirs despite her “man hands”.

I would suggest that a greater number of men in the real world have thicker skin calloused fingers due to the nature of their work, thus lessening their finger sensitivity.

Years ago I was a cook and constantly burned the tips of my fingers during food preparation. Now I work in a retail environment and notice that my hand sensitivity is greater.

I just hope that tax payer money did not go into this useless and flawed study. But I suppose that is too much to ask for.

canadian’s are into statistics , which although they provide 4-10 seconds of interest usually leave a crass or sketchy concept or theory, lame.
but at least i enjoyed the sarcasm in the comments.
men with smaller hands have more sensitivity thanmen with large penises. consolation.

  18. Max says:

Great! Finally something that will rest on its merits, something we can all accept, something that will end arguments, something to make us appreciate our differences and celebrate them, something that reminds us how smart we are cause secretly we knew it all along, something that is so conclusive it begs us to think of course who would think otherwise?

I appreciate knowing this I really do. I cant even imagine the world if it werent true and publishable fact. What kind of world would that be?
