Men’s Health Magazine has put together a list of the nation’s drunkest cities. The magazine is doing a piece for the March edition of the magazine about which cities are the most drunk and least drunk. The information compiled includes records of alchol-related car crashes and deaths, along with statistics about DUIs and drunk driving arrests.
Based on all of the information gathered, the drunkest city in the United States is Fresno, California. The rest of the top ten list is, in order:
The Top 10 Drunkest Cities, according to Men’s Health:
1. Fresno, California
2. Reno, Nevada
3. Billings, Montana
4. Riverside, California
5. Austin, Texas
6. St. Louis, Missouri
7. San Antonio, Texas
8. Lubbock, Texas
9. Tucson, Arizona
10. Bakersfield, California
The Top 10 Least Drunk Cities:
1. Boston, Massachusetts
2. Yonkers, New York
3. Rochester, New York
4. Salt Lake City, Utah
5. Miami, Florida
6. Newark, New Jersey
7. Durham, North Carolina
8. New York City, New York
9. Fort Wayne, Indiana
10. Manchester, New Hampshire
According to the list, there is a trend of the Western states of the country being more drunk than the Eastern states. In fact, the least drunk citiy in the nation is Boston, Massachusetts, and the less drunk cities were all located in the East, with exception to Salt Lake City, Utah. This is because there is a high number of Mormons living throughout Utah, including Salt Lake City, and they do not drink alcohol. Other least drunk cities include Yonkers, New York, Miami, Florida, and New York City.

Not Washington DC? You mean to say our politicians are not drunk, just stupid?
Seriously? I think whoever thinks we should believe this is drunk. I’m telling you, Boston is in the top five for sure.
Funny…Forbes just released a similar study and named Boston the 4th most drunk city in the U.S. This research blows and has no merit.
whoever looked at forbes doesn’t know how to read the damn date it is dated 2006 from mens healt magazine duh..
HAHAH Austin should proberbly be higher on the list, I don’t see why Lubbock is on there though.. There is nothing in Lubbock. & where is Las Vegas?
oh yeah & ps- Lubbock Texas is a dry county LOL
Lubbock, Tx is’nt dry anymore. WOOHOO!!
where is Chicago I know for a fact it should be on the Drunk lists.
I think these are just the stupidest drunk cities. The information is based on records of alchol-related car crashes and deaths, along with statistics about DUIs and drunk driving arrests. Just because those cities drive drunk the most often, it doesn’t mean they are the drunkest.
C’mon – New Orleans (Bourbon Street) didnt make the list ? Not much research done on this study.
If I lived in Fresno Calif. i’d drink too.
Um Krissie, you obviously didn’t go to Texas Tech. You’re right, there’s nothing to do in the city, which is why all the college kids are always drunk.
OF course all the East coast cities make the least drunk list… if you look at what statistics men’s health used to gather these results, you can see that most if not all of the least drunk cities have adminent or great public transportation all around the area. The west coast is far behind on this aspect and much more spread out, hence more DUI arrests and alcohol-related car crashes. EVERYONE drinks.
this guy has never walked through morgantown, wv on a tuesday afternoon.
ok, lets look at these two reports. One is based on actual occurances of the post affects of alcohol consumption and the other is based on a survey ( 3 out of the 5 criterria) what we might do is compare the two and see which cities have the most honest drunks.
Cannot believe that LaCrosse, Wisconsin
isn’t on the list!
Where is Madison?!?!?! You’ve gotta be kidding me.
Good possibility the Really Drunken Eastern cities (i.e Boston) don’t show up on the “Drunken” grid is they have far fewer DUI’s, etc., because more people take public transportation. Seriously, Boston has to be a Top 10 on the Drunk scale.
I can’t believe New Orleans is not on the list. Theres Mardi Gras, Bourbon Street, Crawfish season, and not to mention for every funeral, wedding and birthday everyones always wasted. I think they need to re-do some of this research.
I thought more cities from Texas would be on the list. Don’t they have drive through liquor stores. Seems like it would stand to reason.
I wonder if there is any information regarding the accessibility for public transportation and/or cab services. Many people in New York do not drive, but instead rely on public transportation and cabs. Im sure this has some factor on their seemingly low rate of alcohol related automobile incidents
Lubbock had to find its way somewhere…I would have to agree with Krissie though, Austin should be way up on the list; of course Longhorns probably buy their way out of trouble and so there are no records on file for these statistics.
I can’t believe Wisconsin didn’t make the list.
I’m surprised only one WI town made it on the list…amazing..because I live here and I know that our county alone has 3X the national average for alcoholics per capita..So Yeah For WI !!! The saying is go on Vacation leave on Probation in WI.
This “study” must have been done by people that don’t drink much because I can’t believe that Milwaukee isn’t #1, or atleast in the top 3. I’ve lived here for all 34 years of my life, with the exception of 3 years in Florida, and I’m always amazed at what other states/cities consider to be a “big drinking environment.” If you go downtown, there are tons of more upscale bars and clubs that people can frequent. I travel a lot for my job to major markets, and trust me, no other major city, except maybe New York or Chicago because of their size, has more bars and drinking in their downtown. Then, you have to travel into the general residential portions of Milwaukee’s city limits. People don’t believe me when I say that on a typical city block at an uncontrolled intersection, all four corners are comprised of “towny” type bars made up out of people’s houses. It’s almost synonomous to seeing gas stations at 4 corners, except this is deeper within the residential portion of the city. I went to college in Milwaukee prior to Pabst shutting down in 1999, and we would still hit Pabst and Miller for free beer via their tours when we had longer breaks between classes. That’s nothing new, people in Milwaukee had been doing that for ages. I could go on for ever, but you get an idea of how much drinking goes on in this city.
