One of the heaviest women to ever have a baby has just given birth to a healthy 6.4-pound baby. Victoria Lacatus is a 25-year old woman from Romania, and her dream has always been to have a baby. At 528 pounds, she is morbidly obese and is one of the most overweight women known to have given birth.

Lacatus delivered the baby girl by cesarean section, requiring four times the anesthetic a person of average weight needs for the surgery. Lacatus is being closely monitored after the cesarean section because complications from the surgery can develop due to her morbid obesity. She also suffers from a thyroid condition, which further complicated the pregnancy and delivery.

Lacatus gave birth at the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital where she was transferred from her southern Romanian village because her local hospital did not have a bed that supported her weight. At the hospital, she told reporters, “I wanted this child with all my heart, whatever the sacrifice.” At least ten obese women have previously given birth at the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital, but Lacatus is the heaviest maternity patient they have had.
