Asperger’s Tops Google Searches

Terms relating to Asperger’s Syndrome have topped the Google searches recently. Although many of the searches were misspelled, including one in particular “Assburger’s Syndrome, ” the trend is being credited to the new NBC sitcom “Parenthood.”

One of the executive writers and producers of the new hit sitcom has a son with Asperger’s Syndrome, which is a higher functioning form of autism. He hoped to raise awareness of the syndrome, which many people don’t understand. It seems his plan may have worked, according to the high percentage of searches for the topic on Google.

In the show, two of the main characters have recently been informed their son may have Asperger’s Syndrome, and they are dealing with that fact and trying to learn more about the syndrome. While it is on the autism spectrum, many are not informed of the disease. People with Asperger’s Syndrome can carry on conversations and function independently, however, socially they may seem very awkward. They may have a particular topic that they are very interested in and will focus most of their conversations around that topic. Often times, these people are simply characterized as being quirky, when in actuality, they have a form of autism.
