Baby Slings Causing Deaths

The popular baby slings used to tote a young infant on the chest of parents may lose their popularity very soon. While the slings offer much convenience to parents by allowing them to hold their baby, yet still be able to use their arms and hands, it seems they may actually be dangerous. In fact, the federal government is preparing to issue a statement warning parents of the dangers of baby slings.

While it is unclear if the government is targeting a specific brand or type of sling, what is known is that some of the popular slings have been known to cause deaths in babies. In some instances, the straps have broken and babies have fallen and been injured or died. In other cases, it seems the baby has suffocated and died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) without the parent realizing it until it was too late. This was due either to the position of the child in the sling, or by being smothered by the parent’s chest or clothing.

Complaints have been occurring for years about the products and the government is now prepared to take action. Hopefully it will prevent unnecessary infant deaths in the future.

This article is very vague. If the Canadian government is preparing to make a statement about baby slings, there must be solid research to back it up. I want to see details of the research and references before I will believe there is any danger.

Also, there are many, many types of baby carriers and slings which have been in use for eons around the world. Grouping them as a general danger is irresponsible, like saying that all mushrooms are poisonous.
