Another Food Recall Due to Salmonella

A wide food recall is currently taking place due to a tainted hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) that is used in many different items. The HVP was recalled on March 4, after it was found that the protein manufactured by Basic Food Flavors had been tainted by salmonella. The Food and Drug Administration reported that the plant in Las Vegas where Basic Food Flavors created the food additive was recently found in poor condition, with both dirty equipment and poor drainage systems. This is not the first time the company has created something that has tested positive for salmonella.

The list is growing as to what foods are involved in the recall. There are currently over fifty items on the list, which will probably continue to expand. Some of the items included are some flavors of Pringles chips, some brands of beef taquitos and chicken quesadillas, as well as other processed frozen foods and snack items. The salmonella contamination possibly began all the way back in September, so many more items may have been affected. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) plans to post all products and lists of retail distribution on its website. So far no illnesses have been reported.
