Pringles Recall Due to Possible Traces of Salmonella

Joining brands such as T. Marzetti, Trader Joes, Tim’s Cascade Snacks, and Earth Island, Pringles has issued a recall of two flavors: Restaurant Cravers Cheeseburger and Family Faves Taco Night. This has been done at the recommendation of the FDA, after traces of salmonella were found in foods containing hydrolyzed vegetable protein, or HVP. Salmonella is the most common food borne bacteria that can cause illness, fever, or diarrhea. Normally it is associated with eating raw or undercooked foods such as meat or eggs.

Although there have been no reports of illness from these two flavors, Pringles recall was a precautionary measure. Proctor and Gamble, the maker of Pringles, wanted to ensure the safety of its consumers. All of the affected brands contain HVP powder manufactured by Basic Food Flavors, Inc. This recall only applies to a small percentage of the Pringles products distributed in the United States.

If you have one of the affected flavors, Restaurant Cravers Cheeseburger and Family Faves Taco Night, you may contact Proctor and Gamble for a replacement coupon or refund at 1-877-876-7881. They will have a “best by” date between February and May of 2011. For a complete list of foods affected by the recall please see http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/HVPCP/.
