While millions of people each year depart on enormous cruise ships for a fun filled vacation, it appears that one notorious ship should be avoided all together. The Celebrity Mercury, which is owned and managed by Celebrity Cruises, had to return to port a day early on Thursday because of rampant sickness that occurred on the ship.
According to the cruise company, 406 of the 1,800 passengers aboard the ship had gotten sick during the voyage, which began on March 8. 13 of the 857 crew members got sick as well. While sickness on a cruise ship happens from time to time, the Celebrity Mercury seems to be struck by the bug more often than other ships. This was the third consecutive trip aboard the Celebrity Mercury that led to an outbreak of a norovirus. Hundreds of passengers had gotten sick on the Celebrity Mercury’s two previous voyages.
All three of the voyages departed and returned to Charleston, SC.
