Pill Popping Boosts Brain Power?

A recent report by CBS is bringing attention to a problem commonly experienced on college campuses across the nation. Students are relying on the use of a variety of drugs and medications, believing that they will increase their brain power.

Students are turning to a group of drugs called neuroenhancers believing that the drugs will help them to stay alert and better absorb the materials that they are studying. Medications included in this group of drugs are Adderall and Ritalin. Although Ritalin is a medication prescribed for those who have difficulty concentrating, many students are getting the pills through less than legal methods.

Students told CBS reporter Katie Couric that it is not uncommon for students to take the pills as a means to stay awake, particularly during final exams. Other students reported that they have faked symptoms of attention deficit disorder in order to legally obtain a prescription for the medications.

Psychologist Martha Farah of the University of Pennsylvania is currently conducting a study to see how the use of Adderall affects a student’s classroom performance.

Dr. Nora Volkow warns that both Adderall and Ritalin are as addictive as cocaine and are potentially dangerous when consumed illegally and irresponsibly.

How is the pharmacological effect of a drug different when it is “consumed illegally” instead of when prescribed by a physician? Volkow’s comment is drug war claptrap.

This 60 minutes story on Brain boosting is the story I started covering in Sept. 2009 on my blog http://www.clarity4health.com. I am a clinical child psychologist. I returned to the literature to find staggering numbers regarding the production, prescription, distribution and diversion (illegal distribution) of Adderall and other ADHD medicines. I found a very effective way to boost brains with Cogmed Working Memory Training. I did this with my son and with my clients and their results which are drug-free are quite impressive. The research on this training of working memory has consistently found it to be 80% effective on transferable behavior. So, boosting brains with drugs is not the only way, you can build your mind muscle with this program – guilt-free. Charles Shinaver, Ph.D, aka ADHD Doctor DAD (www.ADHDDoctorDAD.com)
