High River, Alberta (eCanadaNow) - As the heavy rains ease the flood warnings that were posted in SW Alberta have been downgraded to flood watches, and the storm system that has brought flooding finally weakens. For the most part the worst is over and the area in and around Alberta is breathing a large sigh of relief. The levels of water in area riverbeds are beginning to recede, and this is welcome news for thousands of residents whose property and lives were threatened by the floodwaters. Most of the streams in south Alberta have began to return to their non-flood stage levels, and everyone in the region can now look toward cleanup as their biggest concerns. The High River was struck by flooding of a major level in 2005, but flood prevention along with a major dike system, then, as now, prevented the majority of damage. Over 280 millimetres of rain is estimated to have fallen in the region in and around Oldman River basin, while it is believed over 145 milimeters fell in Highwood River areas. Most of the streams in Alberta have been downgraded from flood warning to flood watch or even merely a high flow advisory, as the region and the entire area begins to slowly return to normal. |
