Woman Gives Birth to Ten Babies All of Whom Were Born Stillborn
The Indo-Asian News Service is reporting that a woman, 28, arrived at the hospital in the Central Indian province of Madhya Pradesh to deliver her tenth baby of the night. She had delivered nine children prior to her arrival at the hospital.

The entire pregnancy is being viewed as medical marvel and is likely the result of fertility drugs. However, all ten children were stillborn births. Authorities believe the children died as early as the twelfth week of pregnancy. The high number of births in a single gestation period is attributed to a condition known as ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. The condition is caused by the hormone referred to as “human chorionic gonadotropin” or HCG. This is the chemical responsible for the ovaries releasing an egg during ovulation which can then be impregnated by sperm.

“It seems that that there was no regular follow-up of her pregnancy after [in vitro fertilization],” Dr. Sumitra Yadav, a senior gynecologist, told The Times Of India. “At least three offspring could have been saved by reducing the pregnancy.”

However, if the ovaries are hyperstimulated, multiple births can occur. The condition is usually mild, but in some cases has been observed to be severe. Bear in mind that “mild” is itself a relative term because the manifestation of this condition is a multiple child births. Thus far, the woman who has the highest number of surviving children from ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is Nadya Suleman with eight children.
