Have Trolley, Will Travel – At Record Speeds!

What does one do with ample amounts of free time, money and a wandering imagination? Travel the world? Benefit a plethora of charities? How about setting a new speed record and doing so in one of the most unconventional ways possible – in a shopping trolley?

Matt McKeown, a Plymouth resident, built a record-breaking, jet-powered work of mechanical art, after finding the abandoned trolley in a ditch, fitting it with spare go-kart wheels and a jet engine he purchased on the online retail site eBay and customizing it with a super-heated engine. The result was a new land speed record for shopping trolleys, as he reached 70.8 kpm (45 mph), and shocked an abundant amount of the citizenry.

The 52-year-old go-kart track manager said the inspiration came from a client who brought in a motorized bar stool. That impetus gave way to one of mankind’s most creative, and some would say borderline moronic, technological inventions.

While McKeown would reach a speed of over 48 mph, his average of 45mph was taken as the new record for the history books. It is unclear if his success will trigger further attempts in unconventional land-speed dominance, but his ingenuity and creativity are traits to be applauded.

Maybe Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys should have tried racing his shopping carts instead of selling them.
