Not As Accurate Secure Or Safe As Landline Calls For EmergenciesNova Scotia (eCanadaNow) - - The office of Emergency management for Nova Scotia is warning fellow citizens that using telephone providers such as voice over Internet, or VoIP, for the purpose of calling 911 is unsafe.
The EMO office of Nova Scotia is telling its citizens that calls that originate from a Internet Phone may not be as safe for users, and can lead to a false sense of security, where there may be danger lurking in their usage.
A recent case in Ontario resulted in the death of a toddler when an ambulance was sent mistakenly to the wrong address rather than the current family address in Calgary.
The ambulance was sent to the families’ former address in Mississauga Ontario, but the family had moved some time before and no one lived at the old address.
“People of Nova Scotia need to know there are real potential risks in telephone service consisting of VoIP Service especially in reporting real emergencies,” said David Morse.
Mr. Morse is the Nova Scotia Acting Emergency Management Minister for the Province.
“We do not want to see another situation like they had in Ontario where an emergency call is misdirected and someone suffers loss of life,” said Minister Morse.
