Union Faces Calls To Apologize And Take Ownership

Toronto (eCanadaNow) - Following the Friday night strike of its membership the Amalgamated Transit Union of Toronto is under heavy public critical condemnation and calls for an apology to the citizens of the City.

Local 113 walked out after they chose to reject a proposed contract that was voted down by the membership. Union Officials had supported the contract offering from the City, but the rank and file voted to strike and walked out.

With less than two hours warning, the transit system in Toronto was basically paralyzed from Friday night until restoration of service early Sunday evening.

“The union failed the public trust by striking without warning, its highly irresponsible,” said Conservative House leader Bob Runciman. “Elderly were stranded, young women were left alone without transportation at night, it was highly irresponsible,” said Runciman.

The weekend strike left thousands stranded around the city without means of transportation. Hundreds of workers could not get to their jobs, and the city transportation grid came to a virtual standstill for the duration of the strike.

The strike renewed calls for the Canadian Government to act to take away the right of public transportation and transit unions to strike, but due to the short duration of the walkout this sort of action is unlikely.
