Montreal (eCanadaNow) - - The family and friends of Saul Itzhayek has been awaiting word for some time on the fate of his release.  Mr. Itzhayek was arrested in May of 2007 for entering India without a Visa, and sentenced to three years.

An India Appeals Court heard the case on Tuesday, and ruled that the conviction stands, but that Mr. Itzhayek should be released. They found that the sentence should be reduced to time served.

“We are praising God,” said Saul’s Mother, Angel.  Angel Izhayek is 73 years of age, and spoke briefly with reporters when news of her sons release was published.

Canadian Consular officials have worked feverishly the last several months behind the scenes to get Mr. Itzhayek released. The are scheduled to meet Mr. Itzhayek at the gates of the prison in Montihari, India.  They will assist Mr. Itzhayek to travel back to his friends and family in Canada by the shortest and fastest possible route.

In jail since last May, there has been a lot of controversy over the case due to the situation that he was in when he was arrested.  He was promised safe passage to briefly re enter India to retrieve a lost item, but then was arrested due to his original visa had expired.

The 42-year-old Montreal businessman will rejoin his family and friends later this week, perhaps as early as Thursday or Friday.  Everyone is overjoyed and ready for him to come home.
