Toronto (ECN) - Barbie the world's most famous doll, celebrates her 50th birthday today.
The plastic beauty was introduced in 1959.
At first, not many girls were interested in buying an adult looking doll, but soon girls were flocking to get the latest Barbie with her stylish clothes and accessories.
A birthday message on the official Barbie websites reads:
"For over five decades Barbie has inspired girls of all ages to dream, discover and celebrate their girlhood, from fashion to fantasy -- all in a world without limits."
According to Mattel, Inc, a Barbie doll is sold every 3 seconds.
