
Los Angeles (eCanadaNow) - According to media reports Thursday, a eagle ray leaped from the water off the Florida Keys, Killing a woman on a boat.
Wildlife officials said that the woman was sunbathing on the boat when the fish killed her.
CNN is reporting that it is unclear at this time how the 55-year-old woman died. Jorge Pino of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said she may have died from the ray's barb or a blow to the head.
"It's just as freakish of an accident as I have heard," Pino told CNN. "The chances of this occurring are so remote that most of us are completely astonished that this happened."
Pino said the eagle ray weighed nearly 75lbs.
The eagle ray is common in the waters off South Florida and the Keys and can grow up to 17 feet in length and weight as much as 500 pounds.
