Police Nap Roaming Wild Cat Early Thursday Morning

Maniwaki, Quebec (eCanadaNow) - The excitement and urgent search for a live African Lion in the area near Ottawa drew to a successful close early Thursday morning with its capture and confinement.

Police acting on a tip responded to the call, finding the escaped lion and capturing it without incident.

A police officer with the Kitgan Zibi First Nation went to a private yard just south of town responding to a call from a woman regarding a wild lion. He was able to get a leach on the lion and bundle him into his patrol car, and later quickly transferred the wild cat to a cell at the reserve police station.

Kitgan Zibi First Nation Police Chief Gordon McGregor was called early Thursday morning at home, and grabbing some raw steak responded to headquarters, and fed the newly confined lion.

Province Natural Resources Ministry animal control officials responded and the lion was turned over to their care at around 8am on Thursday.

The owner of the wild African Lion, Stanley Dumont-Whiteduck did not comment regarding the recapture of the wild cat.  It is unclear if he holds a valid permit for exotic pets, or if there will be any charges that stem from the escape of the lion.

The wild lion was on the loose for about 30 hours, following its escape on Tuesday.
