New York (ECN) - Marilyn Chambers, the adult film icon best known for films such as Behind the Green Door and Insatiable, as well as being the most infamous Ivory Snow girl, died over the weekend. She was 56.
Chambers was discovered in her mobile home by her daughter McKenna. An autopsy is scheduled, but no cause of death has been given. Officials did say that no foul play was evident.
The release of Behind the Green Door in 1972 made Chambers a household name when it was subsequently revealed that hers was the face on boxes of Ivory Snow detergent. Though her image was soon removed from the boxes, and from all advertising, sales of Ivory Snow were said to have jumped soon after the revelation.
During the mid-1980s, when then-mayor Diane Feinstein made an attempt to clean up the strip club scene in San Francisco, Chambers was famously arrested while in the middle of a nude performance at a club owned by the Mitchell Brothers, the duo who also produced Behind the Green Door.
Chambers managed to get her name in the news again more recently when she ran as a vice-presidential candidate for the Personal Choice Party in 2004 and 2008.
