Ontario (eCanadaNow) - One of the ways to deal with the various climate changes that are occurring is to design and require that buildings are more environmentally green. This would be a quick fix, but one that would help address some of the more pressing concerns.
Using building codes specifically designed to require more environmental issues be addressed, in addition to passage of laws to require landlords work toward more efficient use of energy are two of the ways to help implement these changes.
In a new report from the Commission for Environmental Cooperation, forcing buildings to be constructed in more green friendly ways would help to address the climate changes taking place.
This report was issued from the group, which was formed as part of the agreements forged under the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA.
“The building code in Ontario for example should be scrapped, and started from scratch,” said Jonathan Westeinde. Mr. Westeinde is a developer known for his green friendly construction methods, and was the Ottawa representative to the Commission.
In addition to being the member from Ottawa, Mr. Westeinde was the chairman of the 10 member advisory international group.
“The provincial government is willing to go further on green issues, including devising a new code,” said Westeinde. “But industry insiders and developers have lobbied very hard against such actions,” stated Westeinde.
The report is the result of a two-year study on climate and climate change in North America. The study reveals that buildings consume one fifth of the energy consumed in Canada, and that in the United States buildings are responsible for two fifths of all energy consumed.
