Canadians Rank High As Big Polluters
Posted on: 25-04-2008

The usage of vehicles that are gas-guzzlers are among the largest factors that have worked to position Canadians near the top of the list as the worlds top polluters.

Per Capita Output Is 23 Tonnes Per Person Of Greenhouse Gas

Montreal (eCanadaNow) - The usage of vehicles that are gas-guzzlers are among the largest factors that have worked to position Canadians near the top of the list as the worlds top polluters.

"Canada has about 0.5 per cent of the world's population, but contributes about 2 per cent of the total global greenhouse gas emissions," the study says.

The pollution on average produced for every Canadian is around 23 tonnes of equivalent emissions each year. This trails the United States average slightly; the average pollution for each American is 24.4 tonnes annually.

Individual energy consumption and use of vehicles seem to be the main sources of high per capita emissions for Canadian Residents.  Some developing nations like China and India produce more pollution, but their average pollution per resident of their population is far less, up to 20 times less than the average amount per Canadian.

Motorists seem to account for the majority of the emissions reported for Canada. The sector of transportation accounts for over 1/3rd of the overall greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 40 percent of sources related to energy since the year 1990.

There is currently an increase of about 109 percent in greenhouse emissions from light duty trucks, vans and SUV type vehicles. These vehicles produce and release about 40 percent more emissions than other types of gas-powered automobiles.
