Posted on: 17-03-2008

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has set new rules for ships and trains in the U.S., calling for soot emissions to be reduced by 90% before the year 2030Washington (eCanadaNow) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has set new rules for ships and trains in the U.S., calling for soot emissions to be reduced by 90% before the year 2030.

The U.S. EPA administrator Stephen Johnson signed off on the new rules on Friday, stating "Today EPA is fitting another important piece into the clean diesel puzzle by cleaning emissions from our trains and boats.  This will help America's economic workhorse become its environmental workhorse as well."

Diesel-powered ships, and trains, must reduce their soot emissions by 90% by the year 2030.

The new rules also state they must cut their nitrogen oxide emissions by 80%.

These emissions have also been linked to global warming.

The EPA has stated that if this is completed, 1,400 premature deaths, 120,000 lost workdays, and $12 billion will be saved annually by the year 2030.
