Salmon Count In Newfoundland Still Low

‘The reason for the continued low Salmon count for the Newfoundland waters continues to stump and bewilder scientists.

Lowered Count Still Mystifies Scientists For The Region

St. Johns- The reason for the continued low Salmon count for the Labrador and Newfoundland waters continues to stump and bewilder scientists.

Fishing in the area has been drastically cut back since 1992 in efforts to help the Salmon of the region recover, and lowering the amount of the catch has been an effort to support that.

Despite lessened catch amounts allowed and curtailed fishing, the Salmon numbers have not recovered, and the experts are at a loss as to why.

The new 2007 results for the Atlantic Salmon Stock Assessment numbers are in for both Newfoundland and Labrador and the numbers are not good.

The survival rate of marine Atlantic Salmon since the late 1980’s has been a major concern to the area, despite efforts by fishery operators, fishermen, and officials to try and assist the Salmon recovery in the region.

Officials cannot explain why more young salmon do not survive their first year after returning to sea, and the long-term survival of the species is threatened by the current dismal numbers of the species surviving.

Overall the prognosis for Atlantic salmon in the region continues to be poor as scientists search for the cause of the depleted Salmon stocks in the region.
