Washington (eCanadaNow) - The American Heart Association has released a new report which stated that cocaine use may be a cause of chest pain as well as other heart attack symptoms in young patients.
Young patients who appear healthy, may have chest pains and other problems caused directly by cocaine use.
The report stated that from 1999 to 2002, the number of emergency room visits related to cocaine use rose by 47%.
The majority of visits were of young people aged 34 to 40 or so.
The recommendation is that cocaine users with chest pain be kept for monitoring for a period of 12 hours or so.
Physicians are being requested to ask patients about cocaine use if they do complain of chest pain.
Cocaine use may have an impact on heart attack treatment as well, as standard treatments from heart attacks can be very dangerous when combined with cocaine use.
