Group Urges FDA Ban On 8 Food Dyes

US Watchdog Organization Pushes For Artificial Dye Ban

Washington, D.C (ECN) -A watchdog group operating in the United States is pushing the US Food and Drug Administration to restrict or ban the usage of eight artificial food dyes.

The group believes they cause behavior problems and hyperactivity in children including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest is a group that works to oversee and watch over the issues that affect the general public.

They have conducted a study including surveys over the last 30 years, and their research has shown that the artificial food dyes in certain foods contribute to childhood behavior and attention disorders.

According to executive director Michael Jacobsen, foods in modern times contain as much as twice as much actual artificial food dye than they used to.  These food dyes are a leading cause of hyperactivity and other childhood behavior issues, according to the CPSI.

The group is asking the FDA to ban the dyes Red 3, Orange B, Green 3, Blue 1 and 2, Red 40, and Yellow dye 6.

The CPSI claim that these dyes are created from coal tar and petroleum sources and are found in everything from snack foods to cereals and soft drinks.

Director Jacobson told the media that his CPSI organization has proved that these dyes and their related chemicals are covering up the absence of real food and that they serve only to make otherwise low nutritional food attractive to children.
