Toronto (ECN0 - Cats and dogs are some of the most beloved household pets around, but they can be a danger to their owners who aren't paying close attention.
The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention says that almost 87,000 people a year head to the emergency room for treatment related to a fall or injury caused by tripping over their pet.
That equals out to 240 people a day that take a fall for their cat or dog, with 62 percent of dog-related injuries happening in or around the house and an astonishing 66 percent of falls over cats happening in the home.
While these animals provide great emotional and physical comfort, they can also be a fall hazard for owners who aren't careful where they're going, and can result in serious injury to the owner and property. The report was published in the weekly Morbidity and Mortality report by the CDC.
