Washington (eCanadaNow) - According to a new study, middle-aged smokers are more likely to suffer memory problems compared to those who do not smoke.
The authors of the study, which has been published in the June 9 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, state that smoking apparently does have an impact on dementia, as it causes memory loss.
The study consisted of data from 10,000 or so British civil servants between the ages of 35 and 55-years old.
They were questioned on their smoking habits and memory.
Lead research Severine Sabia of the Institut National de la Sante et de la Recherche Medicale in France stated "Our results show that smoking is associated with poorer cognition and decline over five years."
Those who quit smoking were also found to improve their memory and cognitive behaviors.
