Pointe Au Baril (eCanadaNow) - The meteor shower that fell over the Georgian Bay area near Pointe Au Baril was caught on videotape. The cameras belonging to University of Western Ontario have recorded video footage of the meteor storm, and in particular one bright meteor that apparently broke up.
The meteor in question appears to have fallen, then broken up when it was about 24 kilometre’s over the ground southwest of Point Au Baril. The fragments from the meteor apparently were scattered over a square radius of 12 kilometres.
A post doctorate student at the astronomy and physics department of the University, Dr. Wayne Edward talked about the meteor. “The pieces of the meteor could be as small as one or two grams,” said Dr. Edwards. “If pieces made it to the ground they would be just scattered around on top of the ice,” stated Dr. Edwards.
“Pieces of the meteor would appear as small, black rocks but a lot heavier than rock,” said Dr. Edwards. “We are hoping to have someone turn in a piece of the meteor, if one is found. We can then analyze any fragment from the meteor and learn a lot about its history,” said Edwards.
No one has come forward with any pieces or other evidence of the meteor. The public is asked to contact the University if they come up with any pieces of the meteor, or if anyone else has caught film or videotape of the meteor shower.
