London, Ontario (eCanadaNow) - - The University of Western Ontario and their astronomers are asking the public and residents near Perry sound to help out. They believe that a number of small to medium sized meteorites may have fallen in the area, and are asking for the publics help.
Recently the Astronomers from the University were able to capture on video pictures of what appears to be a meteor streaking across the sky entering the atmosphere of the Earth. The scientists are hoping that some of the public may have witnessed the fall of the meteors, and that it may be possible to locate one or more of the meteors and recover them.
Peter Brown, University of Western Ontario Associate Professor, claims that cameras for the University captured on videotape a large fireball in the sky on Wednesday about 10:50pm. A large number of the public has called in to the University to report the sighting also, and they have received a number of email inquiries.
Wayne Edwards, a post-doctoral student, and Professor Brown are trying hard to locate anyone who may have witnessed this sky event, or seen where the meteor or meteors may have landed.
“It is a fact that meteors don’t often hit the ground, they tend to burn up in a blaze of glory about 70 or 80 kilometres of altitude,” said Dr. Edwards. “We were able to keep a lock on this one till it was about 24 kilometres from the earth, so we are thinking it might be possible for one or more meteors to have actually struck the earth,” said Edwards.
