New York (ECN) - Before the first pitch has even been thrown, the first strike has already been called on New York Yankee, Alex Rodriguez. A-Rod starts the season on a sour note facing reports that the all star tested positive in a 2003 steroid test.
The test took place before the change in major league baseball regulations a year later that put automatic suspensions into effect for any player linked to steroids. The reports on the test results for Alex Rodriguez come from two separate baseball insiders that anonymously confirmed he tested positive.
The report could not have come at a worse time for baseball. Many believe the powers that be in baseball should have allowed the story to become public back in 2003. By covering up the story, it is now breaking news as baseball's home run record holder, Barry Bonds, is also undergoing a very public trial involving his steroid use.
Alex Rodriguez and Barry Bonds are the latest of baseballs brightest stars that have been linked to steroid use. In recent years there are less and less top players around the league that still appear to be crystal clean when it comes to steroids. The league, which has been trying to crackdown on the widespread use of steroids in the sport, has been criticized by fans and the press for their ineffective policies. Apparently, this crackdown still allows for players linked to steroids in the past to be grandfathered in without repercussion.
