
Ex Wildcat Coach Arrested for DUI The former University of Kentucky men’s basketball coach Billy Gillispie was arrested and charged with DUI in Lawrenceburg, Ky.
Lawrenceburg police responded to a call that a white Mercedes was traveling down U.S. 127 swerving and erratic.
Officers caught up to the Mercedes with Texas plates that was exceeding the posted speed limit and swerving. When officers approached the driver there was the strong smell of alcohol. The driver was identified as Billy Gillispie.
Reports say Gillispie was slurring his speech and unable to maintain his balance. Gillispie, who was unable to produce proof of insurance, was arrested on charges of DUI. Gillispie refused breath and blood test. According to Gillispie’s attorney Darren Winslow said his client was released on his own recognizance on Thursday, he refused to comment any further.
Gililispie told police that he and his friend had been golfing that day. Charles O’Conner who was with Gillispie at the time he was arrested was also arrested for public intoxication.
This is Gillispies’s third alcohol related offense. One of those charges was dismissed, while he pled guilty to a lesser charge of reckless driving to the other two.
Gillispie was fired on March 27 by the Wildcats. Gillispie , who had worked as coach for the Wildcat’s for two years believed he had a seven year contract but no official documents where signed .
Gillispie filed suite in federal court on May 12, for fraud and breach of contract.
Gillispie claims that the school never had intended to sign a long term deal with him. The University of Kentucky athletics has denied these claims. Gillispie is seeking six million for the remainder of his contract.
