Washington (eCanadaNow) - Seattle Supersonics forward Kevin Durant has been named the NBA rooke of the year.

A panel of sportswriters and broadcasters voted Durant into the top spot for the rookie of the year, beating out the likes of Al Horford from the Atlanta Hawks, and others.

The 6-foot-9 inch forward from Washington won the award on Thursday night.

He beat out Al Horford by a big margin.

Durant got 90 first-place votes out of the 125 votes in total.

19-year old Durant told NBA.com "I didn't think I was going to win it.  It's a great honor for me and the team."

Durant was above all other rookies with 20.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game.

He played in 80 of the 82 regular season games.

He becomes the first Seattle Supersonic to win the rookie of the year award.
