Toronto (ECN) - Hockey fans all over North America are anxiously waiting for tonight’s Game Seven of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The series is a rematch of last year’s Finals, which Detroit won in six games. Although celebrations for last year’s victory were peaceful, Detroit police are still preparing in case celebrations get out of hand in the economically-depressed city. Celebrations have already occurred in Pittsburgh, which held a rally for the Pens today.
Despite fan anticipation, Detroit’s Kirk Maltby, says that his team is trying to see Game Seven as “just another game,” even though Game Seven means that the winner takes all.
A Detroit win would make them the first team to win back-to-back Cups since they did it in the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons. As for the Penguins, they are looking to make up for last year’s loss to the veteran team.
No matter how it goes, fans know for sure that the oldest trophy in pro sports is going home with one team tonight. The game, which is the first Game Seven ever to be played at Detroit’s Joe Louis arena, airs at 8 pm EST on NBC.
